How do I export a movie for the Web?

First, make sure you have a QuickTime Pro license for your system. After you've created your movie, select File->Export in iMovie.

Select Export to QuickTime.
Select Formats->Expert Settings.
Click the Export button.
Select Export->Movie to QuickTime Movie.
Click the Options... button.
Check the Video box.
Click the Settings... button under the Video box.
Select MPEG-4 Video, Frames per second: 15, Key frame every: 150 frames, and Limit data rate to: 50 KBytes/sec.
Click the Size... button.
Select Use Custom Size.
Enter one of these Width/Height combinations: 240x180, 320x240, 480x360, 640x480, 720x480 (NTSC), or 640x576 (PAL). Note: 320x240 is recommended for most movies.
Check the Sound box.
Click the Settings... button under the Sound box.
Select Compressor: QDesign Music 2, Rate: 22.05 kHz, Size: 8bit, Use: Stereo.
Check the Prepare for Internet Streaming box.
In the Internet Streaming menu, select Fast Start - Compressed Header.
Click the OK button.
Enter a file name ending with .mov.
Click the Save button.

You can try different combinations of video and sound compressors, stereo vs mono, etc. In my experiments, I have found that the single most important factor in terms of the size of the file that's created is the "Limit data rate to:" option under the video options. You can have a larger resolution movie with the same file size as a smaller resolution movie by keeping the data rate constant between the two. The smaller resolution movie will simply look sharper than the higher resolution one. 480x360 is a good compromise.

How do I add a movie to the Oumu website?

You can only add movies to the website if you are student or teacher participating in the exchange and you have previously registered with Oumu. To begin, log in to the website from the main menu. Next, select the Upload Movies link in the main menu. A form will be displayed starting with your Oumu user name. Select a movie file to upload. The file should have been exported from iMovie in the manner described here, and it must be less than 20 MB. Enter a title, the producers, and a description of your movie in the respective text fields. Choose a subject for your movie from the menu. Choose the display style for your movie. Finally, select the resolution of your movie from the Movie Size menu. When you're done, click on the Upload Movie button.

Uploading a large movie file can be rather time consuming. Be patient! Wait for the file to be completely uploaded before visiting another page in your web browser. When the movie has been successfully uploaded a message will be displayed.

What is the maximum size for a movie?

Currently, the maximum size for a movie is 20 MB. However, most movies can be kept under 10 MB by using the appropriate compression (MPEG4) and limiting the data rate (30-50 KB/sec).

How do I remove a movie from the Oumu website?

You can only remove movies that were previously uploaded by you. First, you must login to the Oumu website. Next, select "Edit Movies" from the main menu. You will see a list of all the movies that you have previously uploaded. On the right will be links to "Edit" the movie information or to "Delete" the movie from the Oumu database. Select "Delete" to remove the movie and then confirm the action. If you want to preview the movie first, click on the name of the movie on the "Edit Movies" page.

What is a poster file?

A poster file is a single-frame QuickTime file containing the image to be displayed in the web page before the movie starts playing. The default poster file for the Oumu website looks like this for a 240x196 movie:

The poster image can be customized for your own movie, but you will need to create it carefully as explained below.

How do I create a poster file?

To create a poster file you can either use iMovie to create a movie with a single frame, or you can use image editing software such as AppleWorks or PhotoShop. The easiest method is with iMovie and it will be explained first. The key to creating a poster for you movie is to adjust the resolution (or size) of the poster to include the menu bar for QuickTime at the bottom of your movie. The menu bar is always 16 pixels high, so you will need to create a 320x256 poster file for a 320x240 movie, or a 640x496 poster file for a 640x480 movie, etc. In iMovie, you can create a single frame either by importing an image from iPhoto or by deleting all but one frame from (a copy of) your movie. You might want to add a subtitle to your poster movie with something like "Click to Play". Use the iMovies Titles feature to do this. Finally export your movie as you normally would EXCEPT that you must specify the correct height taking into account the additional 16 pixels for QuickTime. This is done in the Custom Size dialog box. Be sure to save your movie with a name ending in .mov. You can use QuickTime Player to verify that your poster was created correctly.

To create a poster file with AppleWorks or PhotoShop, use the application to create a jpeg image of the appropriate size (as above). Next, open the image you created using QuickTime Player. Finally, export the image into a QuickTime movie file with a name ending in .mov. That's it!

How do I display a movie with a poster?

When you first upload a movie to the Oumu website, it will be displayed with the default Oumu poster. If you'd like to have it displayed with your own custom poster, you will first need to log in to the Oumu website. Next, click on the Edit Movies link in the main menu. Click on the EDIT link for the movie to which you'd like to add a poster. At the bottom of the form choose the QuickTime movie file that you'd like add as a poster. Finally, click on the Apply Changes button at the bottom of the form.

Where can I find more information about QuickTime?

You can download the QuickTime 6.4 User Guide for detailed information, or visit Apple's QuickTime web page.
